Children played games and traditional pongal rice was cooked after a blessing of the food.
Our afterschool Y.E.S. (Youth Empowerment Service) service users had a Kolam competition. Where traditional Thai Pongal designs were made from coloured rice.
Pongal is observed at the start of the month Tai according to Tamil solar calendar; typically January 14. It corresponds to Makar Sankranti, the harvest festival. Thanking the Sun God for agricultural abundance and is 4 days long.
The T.E.A. Project is a secular organisation. Inclusive of all faiths and ethnic backgrounds. We hold an annual calendar of events; celebrating and also educating our children about the rich diversity of Sri Lanka and the planet. It is vitally important that all our young people understand the benefits and richness of living in a diverse, multi- cultural and progressive society.
